Calvin's birthday!

So, yesterday was Calvin's 5th birthday party! This was a big deal for many reasons. One of the big reasons was that his Nana and PopPop were there for his birthday for the first time ever. So, aside from being here with us when Calvin was born, it had been 5 years since they were able to make it to one of his birthdays.

The other reason that this was special was because Calvin really understood that it was his birthday. We worked all week with him, playing birthday, celebrating, telling him that his birthday was coming, showing him how excited we were. By Sunday morning, Calvin saw the banners, streamers and his presents, and he knew it was his birthday. After a birthday breakfast, we finished cleaning the house.

Calvin started wanting us to "get birthday" for him. Haha. So, for lunch, he didn't want to eat, he just wanted us to get birthday. When we stopped and bought his ice-cream cake, and Calvin saw the "Happy Birthday, Calvin!" on the cake, he shook with excitement. He cried when we had to put the cake in the fridge for the next hour.

Then the cousins showed up and Nana and PopPop. We also had our friend Tami and her daughter Shelby come over. Calvin was so happy and so excited. We let the kids play outside on the trampoline and run around the house for another hour or so.

When it was time to sing "happy birthday", Calvin was delighted. His eyes grew huge as he watched the candles burn. After we sang to him, there was a loud cheer, and Calvin looked up at everyone. He realized, I believe for maybe the first time that day, that the cheer was for him...that this was his birthday, not anyone else's. His eyes lit up with joy and I was so happy for him.

As my Mom said, his birthday was a "celebration of Calvin", what he has done, what he has accomplished and to see the growth of his world and how he relates to people.
